PT Emdeki Utama Tbk (“The Company” or “Emdeki”) was established in 1981 by the founders of Metropolitan Development Group to Producing Calcium Carbide (CaC2) as an import substitute to imported calcium carbide from South Africa, China, Taiwan, Poland and other countries With an average of 25.000 tonnes and US$ 8.75 million annualy from 1984 to 1986.
Covering 14-hectare of land, the plant is located in Driyorejo, Gresik, East Java Province, around 29 km southwest from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city and Emdeki started its first trial production on November 1987, followed by commercial production on February 1988. Within two years after its establishment, Emdeki has gained trust from the market and fulfilled majority of demand nationwide. Some of production has been exported to Japan, India, USA, etc.
A survey conducted in April 1990 showed that ‘Karbit MDQ’ has gained market’s trust due to its quality. In addition to that, the quality of calcium carbide produced by Emdeki has been approved through series of tests by independent consulting laboratory of Sucofindo, with the first one performed March 1988. Delivery time and availability are other key advantages of Emdeki products. In fact, delivery time has effect on quality related to the freshness of calcium carbide. While Emdeki’s distribution system ensures 2-5 days delivery time in java, imported ones requires more delivery time which could result in ashes and quality has decreased.
